Hello World
Hello!
For those of you who don't personally know me, I am studying Software Engineering at Cal Poly. I'm a third year, surrounded by about 80% males, and trying to discover what specifically about technology motivates me to wake up every day and sit through hours of class, labs, and website development work.
At an interview with Microsoft recently, I was asked the question: "How do you stay up to date with technology?" This was an interesting question for me, and it brought on quite a bit of self reflection. I don't (didn't) read all that many tech articles, unless they popped up in my Facebook news feed. I don't attend tech talks or keynotes nearly as much as I'd like to. I don't think I've ever had the time to just sit down at my computer and learn a new coding concept that had nothing to do with school for my own pleasure. Well, okay - I've had the time, but instead of furthering my education I've chosen in the past to either watch the same Netflix series for the seventh time or socialized with friends.
As I thought more and more, I realized that I might be able to be a voice for the Software Engineering/Computer Science student attending college right now that doesn't see themselves as one of those overachieving [obnoxious] students in class. I'm assuming many of you know the student I'm referring to: the one that always knows the answer to every question, or always knows the newest technologies and all of their pros/cons, or seems to only know how to explain programming concepts to me in a way that leaves me more confused than before I asked them for help.
Instead, I see myself as someone who happened upon the Tech Industry. My oldest brother has been coding ever since I can remember, and I could probably classify him as a version of the programmer I mentioned above. (Way less obnoxious, but still smarter than I can fathom). I consider myself to be a very social person, at least when compared to others in my field. I think that although this is a rare and great trait to have as a Software Engineer, I'm not going to make it far in my field at all unless I learn to keep up with the super geniuses [see above].
So, that is what brought me here, to this blog. Although I realize that I may be (and probably will be) the only viewer/reader/beneficiary of these blog posts, it will be a reason for me to research new technology, to try and stay up to date, to express my experiences as a female studying Software Engineering in college, and to reflect on my slow immersion into the "real world".
I honestly don't know what I plan on writing about specifically in this blog yet, but I have many ideas. Here are some things to potentially look forward to:

I honestly don't know what I plan on writing about specifically in this blog yet, but I have many ideas. Here are some things to potentially look forward to:
- Funny stories about being a female in computer science (believe me there are many)
- New technology that I have heard of and my (probably inaccurate and not incredibly intelligent) opinion on said technology - though I must say that this blog will hopefully allow me to create more intelligent opinions on technology
- My experiences in class, work, and internships
- Every day posts about my life
- My writing skills improving with every blog post
So, if you have happened upon my blog, wether it's the first day I've created it or ten years in the future when I'm incredibly rich and famous [95% sarcasm], I hope you enjoy this journey just as much as I do!
